Margarita Roco is a Filipino lyric soprano. Born and raised in Manila, she began studying voice at the University of the Philippines (U.P.) College of Music in Diliman, Quezon City. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice, Magna cum laude. After graduating, she taught voice in the College of Music’s Extension Program and performed opera, operetta, and music theater roles around the country. She was also a regular soloist in operas produced by the U. P. Presidential Commission on Culture and Arts.

Margarita left Manila to begin graduate studies at the Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas. She graduated with honors, and began teaching voice around Dallas. She has also been the music director for a local church where she sang as a soloist and conducted the church choir.

In 2010, Margarita returned to Asia and began working as a vocal artist at the Venetian Resort Hotel in Macao, China.  She sang as a gondolier and a streetmosphere artist until early in 2012.  She now freelances in the Philippines as a singer and voice instructor.

She returned to the Philippine opera stage with an enthusiastically received performance as Gregoria de Jesus in Josefino Toledo‘s new opera San Andres B.  Produced by the NCCA and Tanghalang Pilipino at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, San Andres B boasted a libretto by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario and direction by multi-awarded dramatist Floy Quintos.  Critics praised the “sublime Ms. Margarita Roco” (Fred Hawson: Fred Said: THEATER, CONCERTS, EVENTS) for singing and acting “with intensity and passion.”  (Pablo Tariman: Philippine Daily Inquirer)
